‘I’d rather swallow a screwdriver!’
That’s – allegedly – how the classic cocktail of vodka and orange juice was greeted when a bartender asked a customer for his opinion of the latest drink that he had created.
Another theory is that it got its name from the habit of oil-rig workers to mix vodka in with their cans of orange juice by stirring them with the screwdrivers they had hanging from their belts.
Whatever the true story, the screwdriver is popular throughout the world as a cool, refreshing, and surprisingly potent, drink.
- 2 oz vodka
- 5 oz orange juice
Pour the vodka and orange juice over ice into a highball glass. Garnish with a slice of orange.
Freshly squeezed orange juice will give the best result.
Don’t be tempted to use cheap vodka: it may be easy on your purse but it’ll be hard on your hangover!
To justify drinking it, you could mention that it’s largely orange juice and so very healthy!
