Cosmopolitan

Casually referred to as a Cosmo, the Cosmopolitan is typically served in a cocktail glass, therefore, you may often see it categorised as a martini.

The Cosmopolitan has regained popularity recently thanks to the girls in the “Sex and the City”, who were frequently seen supping a Cosmo. Stereotypically, a Cosmopolitan is portrayed to be a women’s drink.

Neal Murray created the Cosmopolitan in 1975 at Cork & Cleaver, a steak house in Minneapolis; although as with many creations there are always disputes as to who created it first.

The Recipe

This recipe serves 1

  • 1½ measures vodka
  • 1 measure Cointreau
  • 1 measure Cranberry juice
  • Juice of ½ limes
  • Garnish: Slice of lime to decorate

Add the vodka, Cointreau, cranberry and lime juice into a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass (martini glass) and add the split slice of lime to garnish.

Variations

  • Sour mix can be used instead of lime juice.
  • Triple sec can be added instead of Cointreau.
  • A twist of orange can be used to decorate instead of lime.
  • The lime juice can be squeezed into the chilled cocktail glass instead of adding it with the other ingredients.
  • Different flavoured vodkas such as raspberry and citrus can be used.
